John Pettie is an abstract painter working in oils. He likes to work on many painting projects at a time, starting spontaneously and evolving compositions over time. He enjoys trying to paint things which are intitially indistinct and turning them into something rendered and definite – without them resembling something obviously familiar. Often this involves drawing on lessons learned from paintings in parallel. Key to his work isn't to have a predetermined message, but to have subjectivity at its core.
